The Southern California Linux Expo will continue the tradition of providing space to groups to meet and discuss their common interests.  These sessions are commonly referred to as Birds of a Feather sessions, or BOFs.

Splunk Day @ SCALE! Splunk invites everyone to come and be a part of the first Splunk Day at the Southern California Linux Expo on February 26th, 2011. Splunk Day will feature training courses in Splunk usage, administration, and advanced search and reporting. Also, Splunk SE’s will be on hand to discuss geolocation with Splunk and hold open discussion with lots of Q & A.

This is an excellent opportunity to be more successful with Splunk and learn how to achieve better operational visibility. Normally, these training sessions cost hundreds of dollars, but we’re holding this special free session just for SCALE attendees

The Linux Professional Institute (LPI), the world's premier Linux certification organization, announced promotional exam labs for their Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC) at SCALE 9x (Los Angeles, California: February 27, 2011).  All three levels of LPI certification (LPIC-1, LPIC-2 and LPIC-3) will be offered at these events.  The promotional price for all exams will be $99 US (regularly $173), except for LPI-301 (the LPIC-3  certification exam) which will be $219 US (regularly $260).

"Build a Cloud Day" will be dedicated to teaching users how to build and manage a cloud computing environment using free and open source software. The program is designed to expose attendees to the concepts and best practices around deploying cloud computing infrastructure. Attendees should expect to learn how to deploy a cloud computing environment using Cloudstack CE. In addition Build a Cloud Day attendees will learn about tools( Opscode Chef and Zenoss Core) that can be used to handle the dynamics of a cloud computing environment including automatic provisioning and configuration and monitoring.

Many free and open source projects have had success with mentoring programs used to educate people in how to participate in their particular project.   To support these great efforts, SCALE is adding another event to the already impressive list of Friday activities.  The "FOSS Mentoring" event will be held at SCALE 9x on Friday, February 25, beginning at 9 a.m.

This  will be an opportunity to hear about various mentoring programs that are already in place, such as Google's Summer of Code and the mentoring programs organized by both the GNOME & KDE projects.  If you are interested in becoming a mentor for a project, in being mentored, or looking to establish a mentoring program for your project, then this is the event to attend!
