Sponsor Talk: Jetstream2: Democratizing Cloud Computing for U.S. Research

Jetstream2, managed by Indiana University and launched in 2022 as the successor to Jetstream1 (2016), provides cloud-based computing and data analysis for researchers across the U.S. It operates from multiple regions, with its main cloud at Indiana University and satellite regions at Texas Advanced Computing Center, Arizona State University, University of Hawai'i, and Cornell University.
Built on OpenStack, it allows users to create powerful Linux virtual machines and clusters (such as Kubernetes and Slurm), including configurations with large memory and GPU capabilities. Researchers can set up and manage these systems using simple web-based tools like Exosphere and CACAO or through command-line and programming interfaces.
Jetstream2 supports a variety of research needs, including hosting web applications, databases, and collaborative tools like JupyterHub and RStudio. Researchers can also access Linux desktops directly in their web browsers using Apache Guacamole.
With flexible and scalable resources, Jetstream2 helps researchers run simulations, analyze data, and use machine learning - even if they have no prior experience with high-performance computing. This accessibility supports collaboration and advances research across disciplines. Computing resources are provided through the NSF-funded ACCESS project and the NAIRR Pilot.
