Observing the Observer: Monitoring the OpenTelemetry Collector

Audience:
Topic:

As the central component responsible for collecting, processing, and exporting telemetry data, any issues or bottlenecks within the OpenTelemetry Collector can have cascading effects on the observability of a user's entire system. While the OTel Collector comes with some basic capabilities to monitor itself, there is even more that a user can implement to help ensure the reliability, performance, and efficiency of their Collector(s).

This session covers how to accomplish that using a range of available tools; additionally, Reese and Adriana will discuss how monitoring metrics such as throughput, latency, and error rates can help organizations identify trends and patterns over time, and in turn, help organizations identify and address potential issues before they impact critical operations.

This topic is beneficial for the community, because effectively monitoring the OpenTelemetry Collector is crucial for maintaining the reliability, performance, and scalability of observability infrastructure. This talk will provide actionable insights to enable proactive problem resolution, and foster a culture of continuous improvement for the Collector.
