Insight out of CHAOSS: Community Data Analysis Tool Workshop

Topic:

Open source communities are challenging to understand deeply. One can read all of their documentation, attend meetings, read discussions, and start contributing without really understanding the high-level dynamics of how a community behaves.

  • How long are contributors typically waiting before their pull request is reviewed?

  • Are more issues open now than six months ago? How fast are they closing?

  • What proportion of people are doing the lion’s share of the work?

In this workshop, we introduce the tools that the Red Hat Open Source Program Office (OSPO)’s Community Data Team (whew!) uses to guide community-related decision making and sustainability efforts.

We’ll get our tools running from scratch, discuss our framework for community data analysis, and build a brand new visualization in a live-coded session. To follow along, you’ll need the following:

  • docker and docker-compose

  • git

  • Python >= 3.6

  • Juptyer Notebooks

* Participation isn’t required, and we invite all technical levels to join!
