Repodiving into Open Source at CMS.gov

Audience:

The Digital Service at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS.gov) works to transform U.S. healthcare by modernizing systems, improving design experiences, participating in policy development, and delivering value to government, providers, and patients. We accomplish this by recruiting multidisciplinary talent from industry and government for a ‘tour of duty,’ working alongside dedicated civil servants to solve some of the largest most complex problems facing the healthcare system today.

CMS.gov has released dozens of Open Source projects, tools, guides, and APIs since 2014. This presentation will tell the story of our Open Source Journey through the lens of a novel visualization technique that gives the audience a window into the hidden world of our open source code repos, and the community of developers who build them.

If Ms. Frizzle could take the audience on a Magic Schoolbus guided tour of the source code and APIs that power much of the US public healthcare system, it might look something like this ;)

Over 150 million people rely upon the code that we steward at the Agency–much of it already Open Source, and even more that could be–so we need all the help we can get.
