Attending his first SCALE, Google's Tim Hockin will give a talk on Container Management at Google Scale on SCALE 13x Sunday at 11:30. The SCALE Team caught up with Tim to talk about his presentation.
Q: Could you please introduce yourself and tell us a little about your background?
A: Prior to Google I worked at Cobalt Networks and then Sun Microsystems, focusing on system management, OS, and bringup issues. I joined Google's nascent Platforms team in 2004, where I spent several years doing everything from BIOS and bringup to machine management apps. In 2010 I joined the Cluster Management team to work on the per-node agent and cluster systems. In 2013 and early 2014 we saw an opportunity to share more of what we were doing with the rest of the world, and efforts like LMCTFY and Kubernetes were born.
Q: You're giving a talk on Container Management at Google Scale. Without tipping your hand on the actual talk, can you give us an idea of what we
might expect?
A: I'll talk a bit about what containers are about and the different ways they have been implemented. I'll talk about orchestration and scheduling as well as isolation and performance management. Google has been doing a lot of work here for a very long time, so I want to highlight some of the things we do that are not yet part of the model in the OSS world. Of course, I'll talk about Kubernetes, too.
Q: Is this your first visit to SCALE? If so, what are your expectations? If not, can you give us your impressions of the event?
A: It will be my first visit to SCALE. I'm expecting to find an audience hungry for cutting edge tech and insights into how they can develop, deploy, and manage apps at scale. I'm hoping to get bombarded with really hard questions and to maybe plant some seeds of how containers really are the future of cloud computing.
Q: Is there anything else you'd like to add?
A: Looking forward to it! Talking with people about cool tech is one of my favorite things to do.
