The Southern California Linux Expo is proud to announce the second annual Demonstrating Open-Source Health Care Solutions (DOHCS). The event will be held on February 8, 2008 in Los Angeles, California in conjunction with the Sixth Annual Southern California Linux Expo.

We invite you to share your work with or use of Open-Source health care software with the rest of the community, and exchange ideas with some of the leading experts in these fields. Details about the event can be found at http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/dohcs

In response to the overwhelming demand from our 2007 event, this year will be expanded to offer 2 tracks. Track one will focus on the technical aspects of operating in the complex environment of Health IT and track 2 will focus on the business aspects, case studies, and Open-Source successes throughout health care as a whole.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Case Studies of using Open-Source in health care environments
  • Real world solutions using Open-Source
  • Relevance of Open-Source software and open standards for the health care
  • Making sense of the standards soup
  • Privacy and security of patient data
  • Working with HL7
  • Integrating proprietary systems with Open-Source
  • VistA, past, present and future
  • Open-source in the National Health Information Network (NHIN)
  • Integrating proprietary systems with Open-Source software
  • Open-Source in regional health information organizations (RHIO)
  • Open-Source in private medical practices.
  • What to consider when choosing Open-Source software for health care
  • environments
  • Current and future growth of Open-Source in health care
  • Use of Open-Source software for health care in government and
  • nonprofit settings
  • Open-Source in medical research settings and studies
  • Practical applications of Open-Source in medical/health care settings

The proposals should be submitted in form of a 1 page extended abstract containing:

  • Title for the presentation
  • Name, Affiliation, Bio, a passport size picture (optional) and contactemail address of the Presenter.
  • What will be covered. A bullet list or a brief description of themain points to be presented should be submitted. Please include enough detail that will enable the committee to evaluate the proposal.

The presentation setup provided will include:

  • microphone
  • overhead projector (resolution 1024 x 768)
  • a laptop running Linux with a ODF viewer and OpenOffice

Please notify us if the presentation has any specific requirements.

Submissions stored in .doc, .odt, text and PDF format will be accepted.

Presentations are allotted a time slot of about 45 minutes. All proposals should be sent to dohcscfp@socallinuxexpo.org.

Publication Rights -
The conference requires non-exclusive publication rights to submittedpapers including the publication of audio and video proceedings. Copyright is retained by the presenter.
